JOBS CAMPAIGN:
OVC’s Jobs Campaign launched in 2012 by engaging a panel of employers with several hundred neighborhood residents in an informal question and answer session about job readiness. Since then, OVC is emphasizing local hiring and calling on all residents to collectively fight for living wage jobs, especially those in construction, manufacturing, and green or clean technologies. These jobs exist now in our neighborhood, in the City of Toledo, and in Lucas County, and many are often state or federally funded.
PARENT EDUCATION COMMITTEE:
OVC’s Parent Education Committee (PEC) was formed in March 2006 to mobilize parents in ONE Village to improve area schools – Rosa Parks, Sherman, Riverside, Lagrange and Chase.
PEC is addressing important issues related to students’ academic life including safety, parent-teacher communication, after-school activities, overcrowding, and comprehensive school improvement to address academic emergency.
MOBILITY MATTERS:
A major success in 2008 was an agreement by Toledo Public Schools to provide transportation for elementary students who move during the school year to keep them in the same school for one academic year.
In 2008 the Parent Education Committee was awarded a $10,000 “early win” grant from the Toledo Community Foundation to implement the Mobility Matters project which will provide financial support for parents with emergency housing, TARTA passes for students who are not eligible to ride the yellow school buses, and even funding to hire a parent to implement the Mobility Matters project.
